24: 7x13 ramblings

No, Aaron Pierce please tell us what happened to Martha Logan and Charles Logan. I can't believe the writers teased us with that!

And is Bill really dead? How could they not give him a silent clock? He's been an integral part of the show for so long. Are they trying to start a pattern with the dead-but-not-really-since-he-didn't-get-a-silent-clock characters? Because it'll feel really cheap if they bring Bill from the dead.

I'm still not sold on the President's personal story. And the whole part with the daughter feels really weak. It's not even the writing as much as the acting. Cherry Jones looked more presidential in Fox's commercial to stop Global Warming and our Carbon Footprint than she does on the show playing a president.

Kiefer had quite a few too-die-for looks, especially when Jack was telling Larry off. Priceless. And Jack's pain over the loss of Bill? So real and heartfelt. The poor man goes through so much and then they throw some handcuffs on him and gas him? Boy.

I really like the fact that Jack Bauer is the smallest guy physically - he's one of the shortest guys and he isn't all buff in a John Stratum/Sly Stallone/Arnold sort of way. Jack Bauer is really a man's man - an agent who is street smart and more experienced and really knows the innerworkings of the psyche of terrorists. He isn't larger than life; he is just a good field agent.

And sometimes this means that he isn't a superman, he is bound to make mistakes, he is bound to get gassed and framed. at other times, it means that the only way he can get out of a pickle is if someone else (see above for bill's fate) takes a bullet/gets blown up instead of him. I was worried about Bill in the last episode. I really thought Juma was going to shoot him. But it was better this way - it allowed the writers to let Jack walk away unhurt without it being over the top (see Tony's fate in season 3 or Tony's escape from death and coming back to life this season).

Generally, the writing of each episode has been solid and has drastically improved over season 6 and even over some of the other seasons (2 and 3, for example). The overall storyarc has been smoothly transitioning from one storyline into the next without abrupt, sudden turnarounds as is usually the case for 24. Each episode makes me respect the writing staff of the show and makes me hold my breadth till the end of the season, hoping that the following episode will just be as good as this one. So far I haven't been disappointed.
